The End of Winter

And just like that Berlin is looking up. Berlin is funny like that... One day it's cloudy, cold, and miserable and the next you wake up and the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the city is blooming all around you. What can I say it's German. I feel strongly that I can say winter has passed and now the days will continue to get longer and (I pray) warmer.

It is becoming my favorite time in Berlin. I love the evening light. I love the coffees outside. I love the beer gardens. I love the afternoons in the parks. I can't explain the feeling that one experiences as we transition from winter to spring in Berlin. It's so true that Berlin becomes cold, gray and cranky after Christmas. Those almost four months is just too much to handle. So when the sun comes back into view Berliners and myself soak it in as much as possible. It's like this weight is lifted off your shoulders and you feel accomplished. "I made it through winter."

At the beginning of this week, I was feeling the weight of winter. I had a very hard transition back from Greece and then to school. It felt overwhelming and I felt the darkness of winter creeping back in.

It's now Sunday evening I feel like my view on life has taken  a complete 180. (Is that the right phrase? 360 would come back to where I was because its a circle, yes?) Nonetheless, I'm feeling lighter.

Hockey practice was truly the turning point for me. Before heading there on Wednesday night, I felt like quitting. I'm out of my league here... These girls have been consistently playing since like 11 and are playing on turf. Me: I haven't played in 7 years and have little to no experience on turf. Some techniques have changed in 7 years and so has the formation. To top it off I played defense before now I'm offensive to even out the field. It's a position that needs to be filled and I'm a lost puppy on the field. It's a weird and painful feeling to be the bad player. I know the signs... You miss one pass and you don't get passed the ball again. You have the ball and no one tried to approach you because you will screw it up on your own. I know this. I was the good player. I knew these things.

Lucky for me, I have amazing teammates that aren't afraid to tell me where to go. Im so thankful for those ladies who speak up! I'm starting to feel better about being on the field and not fearing the ball. That is something you have to relearn. Also, I'm having more positive touches on the ball. I'm still very rusty but trying to work hard.

The rest of my week really consists of school and working out. Saturday, I had dinner out with three great ladies in Kruezberg. To finish the weekend off, I went with a group of guys to Mauer Park for some karaoke. It's the largest Karaoke in Berlin, for sure. Probably all of Germany. I took some photos and a few videos. Enjoy!

First guy up! He was really great and a bit drunk. I wish I recorded more of his song.

This guy was beatboxing. All of the music you hear is from him!!!

Here's to Berlin for lightening up just when I need it. Here's to another week closer to warmer days and coming home for summer.
And hating those of you who have sunburns in April! ;)

xoxo
