Mary in Scots

So, Edinburgh. I arrived to the city center under the dark shadows of the Medieval buildings that tower over you. In the light, it is quite breathtaking to realize there is still a place with the most magical buildings. See in Edinburgh, they will change the inside of the buildings but they hardly touch the outside.

During my time in Dublin, I wasn't able to get to see more of Ireland. I changed that in Scotland. A group of us, booked a bus tour to the Western Highlands. We got lucky enough to book the same tour as the 1 millionth customer. We got a free little bottle of whiskey and cake! Since the tour just included our driver's knowledge and the transportation- I am very happy. From the past, when you go on a tour a few things are paid for or a meal-- this nothing. I don't know if this is all over Edinburgh or just the one the group leader picked.

Anyway, the Highlands were something amazing. I feel like we got the true experience because it was a foggy, drizzly, and chilly day. I know if I lived in Scotland, I would be napping more often than not! It just has the perfect weather for cuddling, movies, and sleeping all day long! While on our tour, we stopped at multiple castles. Some were filmed in Game of Thrones, Monty Python, and Downton Abbey.

While on our tour, we visited the only castle still lived in. Currently, the Duke of Argyll lives in Inverary Castle. Sometimes, he visits with his uninvited guests. Can you imagine charging people to come take a look at your quarters?

In the little town of Inverary, we were told was were Mary Queen of Scots was held. We wanted to visit the jail but simply did not have time. After this trip, I realized how much I miss learning about history and actually taking a few classes. I wish I could challenge my mind in some new ways.

Here, we had a terrific lunch. I got to try some very traditional Scottish food while in Scotland. I had incredible fish and chips. In Edinburgh, I had Steak and Ale Pie. Oh my! If you ever go, try this meal! It reminds me of true comfort food.

While in Edinburgh, one must indulge in Harry Potter. My friend, Andi and I had a Scottish breakfast at The Elephant House. The Elephant House is where JK Rowling did some of the writing for Harry Potter. During the time Rowling was writing, she lived in that neighborhood. There was about five cafes that she visited to do her writing. So you ask-- why is the Elephant House most visited? While, Andi shared with me it's because pretty much they needed to pick one and they drew straws. OK, not really straws but it was a toss up and The Elephant House won! After, we walked to the graveyard where some of the names are said to be found that Rowling was inspired to use.

I must say Edinburgh was probably my favorite city that I visited on this trip. It has the charm and flare of a small city but still holds a lot of unique qualities. For instances, tons of cute, creative, artsy stores. As you know, this is right down my ally! Edinburgh just wins you over!

All my love.
xx
